The Credit River is the scenic backbone of Mississauga and is the recreational heart of Port Credit. For Mississauga’s Indigenous people, the Credit River was a part of their daily lives. In 1805, when the Chief's ceded the land on which our modern city now resides, they retained their sacred river.
Join local Historian Richard Collins for a tour of the river and learn about the historic treaties that changed the lives of the first Mississaugans and how these treaties have shaped the Mississauga of today.
November 6 to November 12, 2022 is Treaties Recognition Week.
Treaties Recognition Week was introduced in 2016 to honour the importance of treaties and to inform about treaty rights and treaty relationships. Reconciliation is about healing and it begins with a commitment to learn about, respect, and honour First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. Treaties Recognition Week is one element the reconciliation path.
Your tour will begin at the iconic Port Credit Lighthouse (105 Lakeshore Rd. W., Mississauga)
Tours are free, we just ask that you tip your tour guide.
We acknowledge the lands which constitute the present-day Port Credit as being part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy the Huron-Wendat, and Wyandot Nations. We recognize these peoples and their ancestors as peoples who inhabited these lands since time immemorial.
The Port Credit BIA is actively working to acknowledge and celebrate the Indigenous history of these lands, to collaborate with Indigenous peoples to instill a sense of connection and belonging in Port Credit, and to create a safe space for Indigenous peoples within their territory.
